Big Sky Ski Resort
Preview: It’s hard to compare Big Sky with any other resort in this book. It is indeed unique—as unique as the state of Montana itself. Big Sky is an unaffected major-league resort perched at the base of Lone Mountain, a perfect pyramid of a peak halfway between Bozeman and Yellowstone National Park—in the middle of nowhere. Of course, that’s part of its uniqueness. The resort is in the middle of nearly 10,000 acres of wildlands acquired in the early ’70s by the late NBC newscaster and Montana native Chet Huntley and his partners. Big Sky is a wide-open and gloriously scenic resort where spotting a golden eagle in flight is more exciting than catching a fleeting glimpse of a celebrity. Notwithstanding the 113,000-acre spread owned by Ted Turner over in the next valley, there’s considerably more wildlife than star life at Big Sky. Buffalo still roam in the wild valleys; elk, moose, and wolves slide easily through the woods; and ranches are more common than alpine chalets. You roll up to Big Sky from a broad plateau gently rising from the Gallatin Canyon and through a narrow slice in the Madison Range of the Rocky Mountains. Immediately to the north is the Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area; just to the south lies the western border of Yellowstone National Park. Combined, these two vast areas surround the resort of Big Sky with more than 3 million acres of pristine wilderness dramatically accented with a parade of peaks that top the 11,000-ft mark. This tableau of mountains and sky reduces the resort to a speck in the distance, and when you arrive, you see that the Mountain Village stands in harmonious balance with the surrounding wilderness, rolling ranch lands, and rugged forested foothills. It’s an American classic, with clean lines nd simple designs, free of most of the Swiss and Austrian kitsch and the fake cowboy facades that crop up in so many other Western resorts. There’s no need to import a back-to-nature wilderness theme either, for Big Sky is surrounded by the real thing. This chapter contains a thorough description of the resort including how to get there, mountain statistics, trail profiles, lodging, dining, nightlife, and entertainment.
