Preview: Located 17 miles southeast of Bozeman, about 4 miles south of Hyalite Reservoir in the Hyalite Peaks high country. Highlights: This is the singletrack stairway to heaven. It has roots, rocks, and water bars but always offers a rideable line. Intermediate riders will enjoy looping through the many switchbacks, all relatively easy to ride, up and down. Plus you get a babbling creek, wildlife, spectacular alpine scenery, and a "gem" of a lake. Tread: Outrageous singletrack.

Fairy Lake – Brackett Creek Loop  
Preview: Located 30 miles north of Bozeman on the east flank of the Bridger Range. Highlights: Wildflowers, wildlife, and a wild downhill ride. Fairy Lake makes a good (though sometimes crowded) rest stop. Tread: 5 miles on singletrack; 7.6 miles on logging road; 2.8 miles on gravel highway.

Flathead Pass Hillclimb  
Preview: Located 21 miles north of Bozeman at the north end of the Bridger Range. Highlights: An excellent hillclimb between towering cliffs; good views east and west from atop 6,955-foot Flathead Pass. Tread: 2.2 miles on gravel road; 2.1 on rough, dirt (often muddy) jeep track.

Flattop Mountain (Buck Creek Ridge Trail)  
Preview: Located 35 miles southwest of Bozeman, about 7 miles south of Big Sky in the Madison Range. Highlights: Mama-where’s-my-Kodachrome vistas in all directions; spectacular views form alpine meadows of the Spanish Peaks, Lone Mountain, Cedar Mountain, the Sphinx, the Taylor-Hilgards, the Gallatins, and east to the Absarokas. All this and the trail is a tire-tickler too. Tread: All ATV-width doubletrack.

Preview: Located 17 miles south of Bozeman, in the Squaw Creek drainage on the east side of Gallatin Canyon. Highlights: Rat Lake; a terrific hillclimb workout; stupendous 360-degree views from Garnet Mountain Lookout; 3.2 miles of heart-in-your-mouth (but still fun) singletrack. Tread: 5 miles on open logging road; 1.8 miles on old, closed logging road; 3.1 miles on ATV doubletrack; and 3.2 miles on singletrack.

Tread: 21.1 miles on logging road (5.6 miles of which are gated year-round); 3.9 miles on doubletrack or ATV-width singletrack.

Tread: 8.4 miles on paved road; 3.9 miles on gravel roads open to traffic; 8.9 miles on closed logging road, some of which is reverting to double- and singletrack.

Though the road is open, encountering any traffic is unlikely. Tread: 10.6 miles on narrow gravel road; 2 miles on jeep track reverting to doubletrack; 1.4 miles on singletrack.
