Bohart Ranch and Bozeman Area Trails
Preview: Bohart Ranch sits in the historic and rugged Bridger Canyon below the Bridger Mountain Range. The Bridgers are named for mountain man Jim Bridger, who led wagons to Bozeman and nearby gold prospecting areas in the 1860s. The Bohart Ranch trails wind through meadows and forest on both private and Forest Service land. Surface quality: Machine-groomed daily.

Lone Mountain Ranch
Preview: Lone Mountain Ranch’s ski trails are the among finest tracks in the country. The combination of cold snow, impeccable grooming, and a ranch staff ratio of more than one staff person per guest proves why Lone Mountain has long set the standard for guest ranches. Lone Mountain began operating over two decades ago in the Spanish Peaks of south-central Montana. In that time, the ranch has become known for not only the 75 kilometers of trails, but also for some of the best dining in the state. Although guests generally stay at the ranch for a week, skiers can opt for day ski trips or sightseeing into Yellowstone National Park, thirty minutes away. Other winter activities include winter fly fishing, sleigh-ride dinners to the North Fork Cabin, and alpine skiing at nearby Big Sky Ski and Summer Resort. Surface quality: Machine-groomed daily.

Mountain Meadows Guest Ranch
Preview: The 10,000-square-foot log lodge, built in 1999 by the Charles and Eran Severn family, seems like it’s on top of the world. This wilderness retreat hosts up to twenty guests in seven guest rooms and one cabin. The family-run operation devotes its entire 580 acres to the guest-ranching business. In summer, there’s hiking, biking, Yellowstone trips, horseback riding, fly fishing, rafting, golfing, and swimming. By winter, the lodge feels snowed in, yet is only a twenty-minute, 12-mile drive from the town of Big Sky. Day skiers should plan on staying for dinner in the elegant dining room (reservations necessary) for hearty Montana fare, such as elk medallions, bison, and prime rib. The ski and snowshoe trails were designed with beginners and lessons in mind on the Big EZ Loop, and for seasoned skiers on the more challenging Mountain Meadows Loop and Grizzly Getaway. Surface quality: Groomed single track, skate lane, and snowshoe trails.
